The Supermarine Spitfire - Sonically Reimagined
Skyfire began with a single vision - to capture the power, beauty, and spirit of the Supermarine Spitfire and transform it into a living, breathing musical instrument.
Earlier this year, the incredible team at Spitfires.com kindly welcomed us to Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Devon, where we recorded two of their legendary aircraft - the Supermarine Spitfire SM520 (G-ILDA) and the Supermarine Spitfire TR9 BS410 (G-TCHI). Standing on the runway as their Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engines ignited was an unforgettable moment - a sound that carried both the raw strength and the soul of history. We captured every detail: the engine starts, the taxi rolls, the take-offs, the landings, and the thunderous fly-pasts that shook the air.

BS410, built in 1942, saw active combat with No. 315 (Polish) Squadron, flying thirty-five operational sorties over occupied Europe. Lost in service and buried for decades, it was later excavated and meticulously rebuilt as a TR9 two-seat trainer, now registered G-TCHI. The aircraft still takes to the skies today - not as a museum piece, but as a living embodiment of courage, craftsmanship, and restoration.
SM520 was built at the Castle Bromwich factory in 1944 and delivered too late to see combat, later serving with the South African Air Force in a training capacity. After years of service, it was eventually retired and left to decay - a silent relic of aviation history - until its remains were rediscovered and lovingly restored to flying condition. Every element, from its airframe to the distinctive roar of its Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine, was brought back to life. Now flying once again under the registration G-ILDA, SM520 stands as a remarkable testament to the endurance and beauty of the Supermarine Spitfire.

The Sonic Heartbeat of a Legend
At the heart of both aircraft lies the Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 - an engine whose sound is unlike anything else on Earth. Its growl isn’t merely mechanical; it’s alive, breathing, and deeply expressive. As it rises through the throttle, the tone transforms from a low, chest-shaking rumble into a soaring, harmonic roar that seems to split the sky itself.
The Merlin 66’s unique character comes from its supercharged V12 design - twelve cylinders working in perfect symmetry to produce a sound that is equal parts music and power. It’s this unmistakable voice, equal measures beauty and ferocity, that became the soul of Skyfire. When captured, stretched, and sculpted inside Kontakt, those harmonics reveal an almost string-like resonance - the sound of flight, history, and human achievement, reborn in tone.

From Kontakt to Soundbox
Inside Skyfire, you’ll find three core layers. The first two were originally created from the raw recordings of the Supermarine Spitfires - looped fragments of engine tone that were shaped and processed in Kontakt using tools such as the Tone Machine and Wavetable engines. These layers were then faithfully duplicated and adapted for Soundbox. The third layer is derived from our analog synths, including the Arturia PolyBrute, MiniBrute, and Behringer Poly-D, adding depth and cinematic warmth to the instrument.
Blended together, these elements create something truly special: a fusion of mechanical grace and human expression. The Supermarine Spitfire layers resonate with a haunting, almost string-like quality, while the analog synths bring warmth, movement, and harmonic depth - giving the instrument both power and soul.
Skyfire isn’t just another virtual instrument - it’s a tribute to resilience, innovation, and the unmistakable sound of freedom. A piece of history, reimagined in sound.
The Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine - Infused With Analog Grit
The power behind Skyfire comes not only from the unmistakable voice of the Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 engine, but also from the rich, evolving tones of three stunning analog synths - the Arturia PolyBrute, MiniBrute, and Behringer Poly-D. When these worlds collide, something extraordinary happens: the raw spirit of flight merges with the warmth of analog circuitry, creating a sound that is at once mechanical, emotional, and endlessly cinematic.
